Some fresh mysteries

I recently bought several AMG photos, most initially unidentified, and some seemed so familiar that I felt embarrassed to post them as “unknown.” I ventured online to try reverse image searches, and hoo-boy! not good. The photos were generally recognized as by Athletic Model Guild, but the multitude of AMG images out there yielded not one match.

For Valentine’s Day

Everyone but Wat

All five

Four of the five

John, Jeanne, and Rory

“A Sunday at Watson’s”

J. Watson Webb Jr. and Jeanne Crain (1925-2003) worked together on both STATE FAIR (1945) and A LETTER TO THREE WIVES (1949). Jeanne Crain married Paul Brinkman in 1945, which might help date these photos.

Watson Webb’s sister Lila Vanderbilt Webb (1913-1961) married John Currie Wilmerding (1911-1965) in 1935.

“Wat & Smoke”

Rory Calhoun (Francis Timothy McCown, 1922-1999) made his first films as Frank McCown in 1944-45. (He refers to himself as Smoke in these photos.) As Rory Calhoun, he went on to have a long career in films and television. He married his first wife, Lita Baron, in 1948.

James Watson Webb Jr. (usually credited as J. Watson Webb Jr., 1916-2000) would become the chief editor at 20th-Century Fox — his career in Hollywood spanned the years 1941-52.
