…Anthony Caesar, Forrester Millard, and Howard Olsen offer viewers a range of options: mostly lithe, well-built, not yet muscle-bound. Several are beautiful; others are stalwart and solid. They represent their era, one of possibility, of youth, at once carefree and yet scarcely free of the last war.

Fewer than twenty years separate these images from silent films, and of course popular culture was particularly engaged with dance, modern or otherwise. So athletes, bodybuilders, dancers — they all trooped into photo studios to be memorialized.

What was Bob Mizer trying to accomplish with this group of models, with these interiors, published in this order? I think he was playing with lighting, with pose, with expression and stance — a kind of movement in still pictures. This was the age of “art pictures” — wink, wink. But Athletic Model Guild photos from this first year of production do, in fact, function as art pictures, suitable for artists to use in lieu of live models.
