Pragtig fisiek fotoportret van Elliott en sy fyn esel en sy sonbruin. Posed to display his strength or posed like Spartacus freed from his chains. The photo should have been in color. The outdoor setting makes for a fine photo, similar to the work of Alpha Atelier and Jock Studio in Suid-Afrika. Both studios were forced to close down by the apartheid authorities in 1969 as they began to persecute the homosexual community in my country. They destroyed vibrant homophile scenes of the arts and theater in Johannesburg and Capetown, as well as the homophile beach and surf scene in Durban. My homosexual uncle was part of the ballet and theatrical scene in Jo’Burg and the surf scene of Durban from the late 1940’s to the 1960’s. He lamented how much was lost when the regime, not content with persecuting blacks and coloureds, came after homosexuals. From official racism, homophobia, harassment and imprisonment, to conversion therapy, castration and forced sex change surgeries, apartheid Suid-Afrika was a nation of horrors. Thank God apartheid ended ! - Praetorius
This is a sad history, and a lived one — available in recent memory and family stories. I fear we are in for another bout of repression and persecution, and while the surviving art of that earlier period is moving, the conditions in which it was created send a message.
