AMG’s Thousand Model Directory is the standard resource for model identifications during the Athletic Model Guild’s first decade in business, and the front matter includes a list of all the series published to date: A-Z, ZA-ZZ, YA-YZ, and XA-XC. Thumbing through the directory, I was struck by some of the models’ creative renaming, as well as the occasional error concerning the photo number or the album/catalogue.
The earliest one, from the A album, concerns Bob Rodhe, given in the directory as Rod Rodhe.
I should add that Bob/Rod was evidently also known as Paul Rodhe, still active in 1952.
ReplyDeleteDon’t see too many men with wavey hair like Rodhe today.

Back in 1987 I purchased a copy of the AMG model directory and the Grecian Guild Quarterly No 17 along with most of Physique Pictorial and all of Bellas’ the Male Figure in the mail from Bob Mizer himself ! Mizer even called me to tell me he had a fire years before at his house and the water to put it out caused more damage than the fire ! ( my phone number was printed on the checks I used then) He told me he didn’t have a complete set of Physique Pictorial and some of the mags suffered water damage. The set he sent me had a few missing mags and a few had a bit of water damage. The Male Figure set was complete with no damage as was the AMG and Grecian Guild directories. I paid 150 dollars for all of it :)

My family and friends find it odd that I am so intrigued by the images and even the cataloguing associated with AMG. I think it is possible to capture the scale of Mizer’s achievement — and even return it to chronological order — using a combination of his contemporary records and the speed of modern technology, and this feels like a worthwhile aim!
DeleteSo I get your collecting impulse, I should clarify…
DeleteSehr gutaussehender Rodhe sollt komplett nackt sein.
