Ricardo Cortez, Dimitri Buchowetzki the director and Merrit Gerstad the cinematographer were replaced by order of Thalberg who was disappointed by the early rushes of the film Love. Cortez was first thought to be perfect for the role, as he had starred in the successful film Torrent with Garbo. John Gilbert took over the role as he and Garbo were lovers at the time, and Thalberg felt that would bring better chemistry to the romance film. Edmund Goulding took over as director and William Daniels as cinematographer. -Rj
