Mystery guy

  1. One of many Muscle Beach bodybuilders known only to time.
When my bodybuilder uncle moved to Hollywood from Oakland in 1948, he use to take the Pacific Electric red car to Santa Monica from his Hollywood apartment. PE stopped the service, known as the Santa Monica Air Line, in 1953. Other times he would drive to the beaches of Santa Monica, Venice and Malibu in his 1941 Buick Century convertible.
My uncle told me 1940’s and 1950’s were great times and L.A. was heaven, though smoggy !
The beach was a great way to get away from the smog and get fresh air :)
In the background is what was originally the private Breakers Beach Club built in 1926, became the Grand Hotel in 1934 and later renamed the Chase Hotel. In 1994 the building was badly damaged from the Northridge earthquake and by a fire in 1996. It was demolished and replaced by the Sea Castle Apartments.
