Mizer and Conant must have had to rise at the crack of dawn to beat the desert heat for this photoshoot at Joshua tree. After 10:00 in the morning it gets too hot in the deserts of So Cal. My bodybuilder uncle was taken to an isolated desert hacienda in the Mojave to pose for an amateur photographer. He said it was amazing to see such a home in such a desolate location with a verdent garden and swimming pool, much like an oasis. Originally he was told the hacienda was built for an investment tycoon from NYC who suffered lung ailments. The tycoon lost everything in the Great Depression and his desert hacienda was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Another wealthy man bought and restored the hacienda, adding a swimming pool. That’s when my uncle posed for the photographer in the early 1950’s. That owner then passed away and the hacienda was abandoned again and eventually torn down. -Rj
