What was Bob Mizer trying to accomplish with this group of models, with these interiors, published in this order? I think he was playing with lighting, with pose, with expression and stance — a kind of movement in still pictures. This was the age of “art pictures” — wink, wink. But Athletic Model Guild photos from this first year of production do, in fact, function as art pictures, suitable for artists to use in lieu of live models.
Mizer honed his skills further by working for Ko’Vert before starting his own studio and no doubt corresponding with other physique photographers.
