  1. Note the camera set-up in the first image — a lot of work went into those dune snapshots.

    1. Interesting element when shadows of film equipment or the photographer are inadvertently shown :)
The flashbulb unit and what I imagine are light meters are seen in the top photo.
Great skill is required to film outdoors in the sunlight and even then flashbulb units are at times required to get a desired light level and effect.
To beat the desert heat, McPike and Poling were probably photographed early in the morning in summer or in the late fall, early winter during the day.
My bodybuilder uncle told me of himself being driven out to Death Valley in summer of 51 for a physique photoshoot. He and the photographer spent the night at a motor court motel and then the photographer had him get up at the crack of dawn to start the photoshoots so they could beat the heat. My uncle said it was cold as hell in the early morning !
A thermos bottle of hot coffee, an Indian blanket and sitting in the photographer’s Packard with the engine and heater running kept him warm between the photo sessions. By 10 o’clock in the morning the heat of summer began to hit and the photo sessions ended.

    2. Yes, it all looks carefree, but the long set-ups and reliance on the weather must have been challenging…

  3. Uitsonderlike fotos deur Bellas.
Soos stilprente uit 'n swaard en sandaal-fliek wat destyds so gewild was.
