Studies in silver

  1. Bodybuilder Vince Gironda also did a photo series like this.
In the film the Wizard of Oz, Buddy Ebson was to play the tin man but had a severe allergic reaction to the metallic paint applied to his skin and had to be hospitalized. Jake Haley took his place and he also had some problems with the metallic makeup. Metallic makeup is now safe with better compounds, but has to be left off the palms, soles and groin to prevent skin suffocation. At Springfield College in Massachusetts a tableau festival is held every year where the student athletes wear metallic makeup n their near bare bodies.

    1. I think Bob Mizer did other silver studies in this period — I’ve seen at least one other model in body paint and with similar lighting, seemingly from the same early-1950s vintage.
