Mysteries solved

Dian Hanson’s two-volume AMG model directory brought me Ray Maxwell, John McClutcheon, and Andy Nickels, and paging through the THOUSAND MODEL DIRECTORY led me to their album or catalogue.

Ray Maxwell

John McClutcheon

Andy Nickels

My hat is off to the blog’s readers who can quickly recall (or find) images inaccessible to Google!

  2. You have it as John McCutcheon here whereas I have it spelled McClutcheon and I have a page of AMG models (with Eddie Taylor and another unnamed model pp 6 & 7) where he's called John McClutchens. The page thanks AMG for "their wonderful special work sent to us for our Navy Issue". This sort of inconsistency in names is annoying when one strives for accuracy!

    1. It’s a problem! I try to go with the contemporary name, but the later directories introduce problems (almost) as often as they clarify. I like the ephemerality of the original work — the very idea that 80 years on people would struggle to find a name and stick to it! — but with the instability of purpose in these young men’s lives we have our work cut out for us.

    2. And of course you are right: the directory gives John McClutcheon!
